Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to common questions about bone ash grades, applications, ordering, and shipping.
What is bone ash used for?
Bone ash is used primarily in the non-ferrous metals industry as a mold release agent, helping protect exposed surfaces and support cleaner casting operations.
Which bone ash grade should I choose?
Typically the majority of our customers find that the more cost effective Natural Bone Ash suites their requirements. Our Aluminum Grade Bone Ash is primarily used by customers who require a product that has better packing ability and retains its shape more readily.
Where is Murlin bone ash applied in casting operations?
Bone Ash is applied anywhere molten non-ferrous metals make contact as they do not wet dry bone ash. These include transfer troughs, spouts, pour points, filter boxes, dross skimming containers, damns, furnace tools and permanent casting molds. It can be applied dry, or as a slurry mixing two pounds of bone ash with a gallon of water. A glove or brush is used to apply dry whereas a brush or a spray gun can be used to apply the slurry. It is recommended to use the slurry pretreatment on a warm surface to allow it to dry completely. Subsequent coatings of dry bone ash can be applied without additional slurry pretreatment.
What are the main benefits of using bone ash vs other coating materials?
1) Cost effective
2) Provides a safety barrier and a “super plus” in overall housekeeping in a casting operation
3) Improves the appearance of coated items
4) Reliable leak proof joints and damns
5) It is cleaner, there is no danger of contamination from impurities such as iron which may be present in other coating materials
6) It is a more efficient coating, covering up to 3 times more than other coating materials
7) Murlin Bone Ash works into the pores of the refractory providing better coating adhesion
8) More resistant to wetting enabling coated materials to last longer
